This cake shop was founded in 1855 by Dámaso de la Maza, who was born in the La Rioja region of Spain and who was the official confectioner for Queen Isabel II.
The establishment has changed little since those former times, since the decoration in mahogany, bronze and marble and the quality of its sweets are the same.
Among the specialities here are the azucarillos, small delicacies traditionally taken with aguardiente, and the so-called 'pastas del Consejo', biscuits which were originally made to be served at Cabinet meetings (Consejos). The cake shop has a small tea room where these delights may be enjoyed.
